Hugh Gunn joined the Royal Navy at sixteen as an artificer apprentice. He failed the apprenticeship two years in, retrained as a mechanic, and qualified as a submariner. At twenty-one he grew up a little and began studying for A-levels at night school — gaining Physics after six months and Mathematics after a further nine — in order to apply for a commission.
Selected as an officer at twenty-four, he served on HMS Ark Royal during the First Gulf War and then read engineering at the Royal Naval Engineering College. At thirty, with the rank of Lieutenant, he concluded that the Royal Navy would not fulfil his ambitions and left for the IT industry.
He spent two decades in enterprise software sales — Computer Associates, Sequent, Compaq (later Hewlett-Packard), Hyperion (later Oracle), and SuccessFactors (later SAP) — and later rose to Vice President at two different US professional services firms. In 2018 he founded The Mini & BMW Specialist, an independent automotive engineering business in the West Midlands.
That triangulation — defence, global technology, and small-business ownership — is the experiential basis of his work. Across three very different worlds, the failure modes turn out to be remarkably consistent.
He thinks like an engineer. As a child he took things apart to see how they worked. Much later in life, he started putting them back together again. The Leaderment Codex is the same instinct applied to leadership — taking it apart to see how it works, and putting the mechanism back together as something that can be measured.
The book treats leadership as a system rather than a mystery. It models the forces that drive — or destroy — organisational performance as thirteen mathematical relationships, falsifiable and applied.
